Ning Que wakes up in a world that looks like Tang Dynasty China, except there's cultivation, conspiracies, and a whole lot of people trying to kill him. Good thing he's got a big black umbrella and a tiny girl named Sangsang watching his back.
Trailer's out

The PV dropped a bit ago. Animation looks clean, and the atmosphere is on point.

Alright, let's talk about Ever Night. If you've been around the donghua space for a while, you might recognize the name from the live-action drama that came out a few years back. But this animated version? It's a fresh adaptation of Mao Ni's novel, and from what I've seen so far, it's shaping up to be something worth paying attention to.

BiliBili's dropping this on April 23, with Wonder Cat Animation handling the production. That's the same studio that worked on Ghost Blows Out the Light and parts of The Great Ruler Nian Fan. They've got experience, and the trailer shows it — the backgrounds have that painted, moody feel, and the action sequences don't look like they skimped on frames.

What's the story actually about?

Ning Que is our guy. He's not some reincarnated god or hidden genius — he's just a dude who survived a massacre when he was four years old, crawled out of a pile of bodies, and picked up a black umbrella that turned out to be way more than just rain gear. He also found a baby named Sangsang, and the two of them have been inseparable ever since.

The world he lives in looks a lot like Tang Dynasty China, but under the surface it's a cultivation realm with its own rules, powers, and dangers. Ning Que wants to get stronger, not just for the sake of power, but because he's got a score to settle. His whole family was wiped out, and he's been hunted for years. The guy's got reasons to be angry.

The problem? He's got zero talent for cultivation. Like, none. Most people would just give up and live a quiet life. Ning Que? He says screw that and finds another way. That's the core of his character — he's stubborn, a little reckless, and absolutely refuses to bow to fate.

The black umbrella and Sangsang

Let's talk about that umbrella for a second. It's not just a weapon — it's practically a character in its own right. Ning Que found it in a sea of blood and corpses after his family was killed. It's big, it's black, and it's got some serious power behind it. In the novel, it's one of those iconic items that defines the whole aesthetic. You see Ning Que walking around with that thing, and you just know something's about to go down.

And then there's Sangsang. She's the baby he found that same night, and she's grown up alongside him. She's tiny, quiet, and handles all the practical stuff — cooking, cleaning, managing their money. But she's also his anchor. When Ning Que's out there making enemies and getting into fights he probably shouldn't win, Sangsang is the reason he keeps coming back. Their relationship is one of the best parts of the story. It's not romantic in a flashy way — it's just two people who've been through hell together and don't know how to exist without each other.

Who's making this happen

🎬 Studio: Wonder Cat Animation. They've been around for a bit — worked on Ghost Blows Out the Light: Return to the South China Sea, parts of The Great Ruler Nian Fan 2, and a few other projects. Their style leans toward atmospheric backgrounds and fluid combat. The Ever Night trailer has that same feel.

📖 Source: Mao Ni's web novel. Same author as Way of Choices (Ze Tian Ji). If you know that one, you know he likes slow burns, philosophical tangents, and characters who earn every scrap of power they get.

📺 Platform: BiliBili exclusive. They've been investing more in original donghua lately, and this is one of their bigger titles for 2026.

What's got me interested
  • The underdog angle. Ning Que isn't born special. He doesn't have a ring grandpa or a heaven-defying treasure (okay, maybe the umbrella counts, but it's not giving him free power-ups). He has to work for everything, and that makes his wins feel earned.
  • The atmosphere. The trailer gives off this heavy, almost melancholic vibe. It's not a bright, colorful cultivation world — it's gritty, grounded, and feels lived-in.
  • Ning Que and Sangsang. Their dynamic is the heart of the story. If the donghua nails that, everything else will fall into place.
  • It's different. So many donghua follow the same template. Ever Night feels like it's doing its own thing, and I respect that.

Will it be for everyone? Probably not. If you're looking for nonstop action and rapid-fire power-ups, this might feel slow. But if you like stories that take their time, build their world, and make you care about the characters before throwing them into chaos, Ever Night looks like it's gonna deliver.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one when it drops April 23. If the first few episodes hit, I'll probably stick around for the whole ride.
