Season 2 of Purple River started back on July 30, 2025. It was supposed to be a standard 52‑episode weekly release. But Tencent did something unusual — they aired the first 40 episodes back‑to‑back through early February 2026, then stopped cold on February 12. No announcement. No return date. Just silence. Fans have been asking about episodes 41 through 52 ever since. Now we finally have an answer: the remaining episodes resume Monday, May 12 on Tencent Video, starting with episodes 41 and 42.
The hiatus was unusual for a "year‑round" (年番) donghua — normally these shows just keep going week after week. But BUILD DREAM and Tencent Penguins Pictures, which jointly produce the series, apparently needed the additional production time to polish the final arc. From the look of the new trailer, the extra wait was justified. The animation quality appears sharper than the earlier episodes, and the battle sequences feel more intense, especially the large‑scale clashes where hundreds of soldiers are shown on screen simultaneously.
Purple River is set on the fictional Western River Continent, where the once‑mighty Zichuan family holds its ground against the Demon race to the east, the Liufeng family to the west, and the Lin family to the south. The political landscape is brutal — loyalty shifts constantly, and betrayal is practically a career path for most nobles. The three central figures, known as the "Three Heroes of Zichuan," are Di Lin (the cold strategist), Sterling (the patriotic soldier), and Zichuan Xiu (the rogue with a hidden genius).
In this second season, Zichuan Xiu has been through hell. He entered the demon camp alone, killed the traitor Lei Hong with his own hands, and barely escaped alive. But instead of being welcomed back, he was framed — the demons used misinformation to convince the Zichuan family that Xiu had turned against them. The family issued a kill order on him. Wounded, hunted by both sides, and running on sheer stubbornness, he eventually ended up in the Far East, where the Guardian Elders of the Sacred Temple recognized his worth. They backed him. Now he commands hundreds of thousands of allied troops, and they call him "The Bright King."
One of the most exciting things the return trailer shows is the three brothers finally reuniting. Di Lin, Sterling, and Zichuan Xiu haven't fought together as a unit in a long time — the political situation drove them apart, and each had their own path to walk. But with the demon threat escalating and human settlements falling, the three of them are putting old tensions aside.
The trailer shows multiple factions of humans coming together — not just the Zichuan family, but other houses and independent militias who realize that if they don't cooperate now, there won't be anyone left to fight for later. It's the kind of full‑scale coalition warfare that the series has been building toward since the first season. Di Lin brings the strategy. Sterling commands the army. And Zichuan Xiu — well, Zichuan Xiu does what he does best: he walks into impossible situations and somehow walks back out with the enemy's head.
Studio: BUILD DREAM is the animation studio behind this series. If the name sounds familiar, they've worked on titles like Deadly Response and Great King of the Grave: Secrets of the Qilin. Their forte is 3D military‑themed donghua — lots of armor, lots of formations, lots of large‑scale battles.
Source Material: The whole thing is based on a web novel by Lao Zhu (老猪), which ran from 2002 to 2009 on Qidian. It's 2.37 million characters worth of political intrigue, war, and world‑building. The novel is divided into five parts, and the donghua adaptation has been slowly working through them. For context: the first season (42 episodes, plus a 9‑episode interactive spinoff) covered parts one and two. Season 2, with its 52 episodes, moves through parts three and four. By the end of this remaining batch of episodes, the fifth and final part should be well underway.
Cast: The voice cast includes some heavy hitters from Chinese voice acting — Qian Wenqing as young Zichuan Xiu, Zhang Jie (widely known as "Ajie," a veteran of too many donghua to list), Bao Mu Zhong Yang, and Nie Xiying. The director is Liu Ying, who has been with the project since the beginning.
